Don’t miss our talk on efficient water purification!
Join Luciana Mendes, Global Sales Manager at Alfa Laval, as she explores how waste heat recovery and thermal desalination can increase efficiency in green hydrogen production.
Presentation title: “Efficiency on water purification system for renewable hydrogen production.”
Date: 21 October 2025
Time: 15:45-16:10
Track: Green Hydrogen Production & Electrolyser Development
Cutting costs and water waste in renewable hydrogen production
Renewable hydrogen is vital for decarbonizing heavy industries. But to scale it sustainably, we must reduce both cost and water use. At Alfa Laval, we believe energy efficiency is the fastest way to do both.
Each 10 MW electrolyser needs 50–60 m³ of clean water daily, making water quality a growing challenge. At the same time, regulations are tightening.
Our solution: turn waste into value by using electrolyzer waste heat for thermal desalination. The result? Higher efficiency, lower costs, and less pressure on freshwater resources.
By recovering 20–40% of excess heat, we cool the system and generate clean water in one smart step.
With Alfa Laval HyDuo, waste heat purifies sea, river, or brackish water—producing cleaner water than single-stage RO and extending electrolyzer life. It’s a strong answer to the cost and water barriers of renewable hydrogen—especially in water-stressed regions.
Alfa Laval offers the widest range of energy-efficient heat transfer solutions for hydrogen production, transportation, distribution, storage, and use. With 90 years of experience, we’re a trusted partner across the hydrogen value chain.
Technologies featured at the event:
- Alfa Laval HyDuo freshwater generator
- GPHE and AlfaNova for electrolyser stacks
- PCHE for hydrogen tank station pre-cooling
- Industrial cryogenic pump LH₂ – NEW

Five areas where Alfa Laval supports the hydrogen economy
1. Electrolyser cooling
Did you know that 20-40% of the energy generated by electrolysers is lost as heat? Alfa Laval’s heat transfer technology ensure efficient electrolyser cooling, balancing-of-plant and enables heat reuse.
4. Fuel cell system optimization
Converting hydrogen-based fuels back into power is made possible with fuel cells. Alfa Laval’s advanced heat transfer technology allow for reliable heat performance and enable development and scale up of fuel cell system solutions.
2. Water purification for hydrogen production
High water quality is essential in renewable hydrogen production. But did you know that Alfa Laval’s heat transfer technology makes it possible to use sea or river water in renewable hydrogen production, at the same time as increasing the system efficiency?
5. Pre-cooling in hydrogen refuelling
Efficient and safe hydrogen refuelling is important to support a viable, hydrogen-based transportation infrastructure. Alfa Laval’s heat transfer technology allows for optimized pre-cooling in hydrogen refuelling solutions.
3. Power-to-X solutions
Converting renewable electricity into vital molecules requires a broad system perspective. Alfa Laval’s expertise and wide range of heat transfer technology can offer efficient heating and cooling in any power-to-X application.
